Daily Headlines: November 11, 2009

* Costa Rica: Former vice president Laura Chinchilla is the odds-on favorite to become Costa Rica’s next president and one of the few female head of states in Latin America.

* U.S.: Lost among the hullabaloo over the execution of the “D.C. Sniper” was that of ex-gang leader and convicted murderer Yosvanis “El Cubano” Valle.

* Paraguay: Who was behind the suspected poisoning with pesticide of over 200 indigenous Paraguayans?

* Puerto Rico: Tensions could once again come to a boil in Puerto Rico after an additional 2000 public workers were laid off on top of the 12,000 dismissed earlier this year.

"One of the few female head of states in Latin America"? It's true, if you visit any gathering of
Latin American presidents, you see that men are overrepresented. Still, women are in charge in Argentina and Chile, two of the most important countries in the region. Soon enough, women could be running Costa Rica and Brazil, too.

That's a pretty impressive record, I'd say, particularly compared to the United States.

the next Chilean president will most likely be male. Yet it most certainly is a very impressive record especially if one also examines the Caribbean (e.g. ex-jamaican head Portia Simpson Miller) or looks at recent history (Panama's Mireya Moscoso and Nicaraguan Violeta Chamarro). Even in countries like Ecuador and Haiti women have also served as acting presidents since the early 90s.
