Morning briefs: October 25

* A bit of old news, but Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez proposed building a railroad from Venezuela’s coast all the way south to Argentina’s interior.

* Stocks in Latin American markets ended mixed on Tuesday with Brazilian stocks going up and Mexican stocks falling. Meanwhile, Argentina’s government renewed and extended price controls until the end of 2007 in order to fight rising inflation rates.

* Over 1000 people have been evacuated near the Baja California coast of Mexico as Tropical Storm Paul nears the mainland.

* Environmentalists in Jamaica worry that bauxite mining- one of the main industries on the island- is seriously damaging the country's flora and fauna.

* Support for Chilean president Michelle Bachelet remains steady around the 50% mark.
